From the moon landings to 9/11, from QAnon to chemtrails, from Covid-19 to vaccines— conspiracies abound in American society. And according to many surveys and studies, Christians seem to be more likely than other groups to believe them. Should this be the case? How should Christians discern true conspiracies from false ones?
IS IT MORAL FOR CHRISTIANS TO USE CONTRACEPTIVES?
Up until the last 100 years, the Christian church held to a unanimous belief regarding sexual relations—that the primary purpose was procreation. Now, Christians can have significantly differing views about contraceptives. While some Christians promote almost all birth control methods, others completely oppose any contraceptives and choose to have the maximum number of children that they can. Both sides may feel strongly about their convictions to use or refuse contraception.
ARE CHRISTIANS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY?
In recent years, we have become familiar with the phrases “the right/wrong side of history.” It was a favorite phrase of President Obama, and, just recently, Senators who acquitted President Trump were said to be on the “wrong side of history.” Likewise, with the recent passage of the Equality Act in the House of Representatives, those from the LGBTQ+ community have said that passing the bill will put our nation on the “right side of history.”
J.K. ROWLING, TRANSGENDERISM, AND CANCEL CULTURE
Recently, J.K. Rowling, the acclaimed author of the Harry Potter book series, received an award from the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) for an essay she wrote on sex and gender issues. The essay, written back in June 2020, detailed her position on transgenderism and the effects of erasing the factual basis for biological sex.
CANCEL CULTURE AND THE BIBLE
In an age of social media, a phenomenon has occurred which is causing people to lose their jobs or reputations: cancel culture. In a nutshell, cancel culture is a form of social ostracizing of an individual, group, or company in order to publicly shame them by withdrawing public or financial support.
THE QANON PHENOMENON
Search terms related to QAnon have dramatically risen since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Several articles in prominent news outlets have shown how many Evangelical Christians being drawn into the QAnon fold, becoming avid advocates on social media for many ideas in the QAnon universe and leading to divisions in their churches. In light of this growing prominence, how should Christians think about QAnon?
