BREONNA TAYLOR AND THE SEARCH FOR JUSTICE
For months, the tragedy of Breonna Taylor’s death has been a source of protests across our country. The hashtag #SayHerName has been a rallying cry to demand justice for Breonna’s death. However, what really happened that night remains uncertain. What does justice look like in the case of Breonna Taylor when we don’t know the full truth?
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
One study concluded that Christians are growing less concerned about the effects of consumerism on the planet. There are many outstanding concerns related to human effects on the environment. Some of these include deforestation, climate change, pollution, and the expansive use of single-use plastics. While certain questions of climate change are unclear, certain realities of human consumerism are affecting the earth negatively. How should Christians approach such issues?
RUTH BADER GINSBURG
Christians in the media have responded to the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a variety of ways. Some Christians may recall to mind some of the decisions that she made as a justice which are starkly at odds with the Christian worldview. Most notable of these opinions was Ginsburg’s belief that all women have a right to an abortion. How should Christians respond to the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg as they attempt to sift through the positive and negative aspects of her time as a justice?
BIBLICAL LOVE AT THE BORDER
The Bible has a lot to say about how Christians are to treat one another and even addresses how to interact with those residing in your land who reject your culture, traditions, and religion. God is clear that He loves the foreigner and that means that Christians should too, both in principle and in practice. God shows that love for the foreigner is not a rejection of justice. Christians are likewise called to reflect the love of God and the justice of God simultaneously.
IS PEDOPHILIA THE NEW NORMAL?
It seems like every time I open social media or turn on the news, there’s another statement about how the culture is normalizing pedophilia. From Hollywood to children’s dolls to California state senators, there have been accusations of those trying to sexualize our youth and remove the punishments for those who rape or molest them. Is there any truth to these claims? Is culture really trying to normalize and legalize pedophilia?
CONTACT TRACING FOR CHURCHES
In an effort to fight the spread of COVID-19, many state and county officials have been requiring churches to collect the contact information of those who attend worship services and even some outdoor events like baptisms, weddings, and funerals. This is called contact tracing. If someone were to attend one of these events and display symptoms or test positive for COVID-19 within 2 days of that event, then health officials would be able to “trace” the possible routes that the disease could have spread.
TO WEAR A MASK OR NOT TO WEAR A MASK?
Wearing a face mask has become a source of great controversy and confusion in the United States. To some people, wearing or not wearing a mask has become more of a political statement than a health decision meant to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Videos have emerged showing people getting into heated arguments over wearing or not wearing a mask. In such a tense environment, how should Christians think about something as simple as wearing a face mask?
ARRANGED MARRIAGE AND THE BIBLE
With the influx of migration as well as our growing ability to connect with those in other cultures, some may wonder if the Western form of dating is the best approach to courtship and enduring marriages. This kind of dating is not the only way to begin to establish a marital relationship, as marital traditions can vary depending on culture. Another way marriages are established is through arranged marriages.
THE QANON PHENOMENON
Search terms related to QAnon have dramatically risen since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Several articles in prominent news outlets have shown how many Evangelical Christians being drawn into the QAnon fold, becoming avid advocates on social media for many ideas in the QAnon universe and leading to divisions in their churches. In light of this growing prominence, how should Christians think about QAnon?
FEAR & THE COVID VACCINE
Christian support for vaccines has a longstanding history. In recent years, skepticism towards vaccines has grown and infiltrated Christian and non-Christian groups alike. In the early 2000s, celebrities began speaking out against vaccines and the negative effects they believed the vaccines had on their children. The anti-vax movement (as it is commonly referred to) has continued to grow during the Coronavirus pandemic as health leaders have sought to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. Even those who are generally “pro-vaccine” have concerns about the upcoming COVID-19 vaccine and its short trial period. Due to these concerns, many say that they will wait to receive the vaccine or will not get it at all.
CAN WE TRUST THE BIBLE?
The accuracy of the Bible and reliability of its manuscripts have been called into question by skeptical scholars for years. This claim is one that many may use to refute Christianity, but does it have any biblical or historical grounding? Before we can holistically address the objection to Christianity, it is important that we first ask the question, “What does the Bible claim to be?” The Scripture attests to its own reliability as the Word of God.
SHOULD CHRISTIANS VOTE FOR THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS?
Voting is an important democratic responsibility. Christians should steward their vote for the advancement of the Kingdom similarly to how Paul used his Roman citizenship (Acts 22:25-29). Elections are a great opportunity to use one’s vote for the best possible option. However, it is not always clear what the best options are or how to address moral dilemmas that arise during the voting process.
ARE MEGA-CHURCHES BIBLICAL?
Mega-churches are one way in which Christian leaders have attempted to accommodate large numbers of worshipers and spectators gathering each weekend. Their presence has raised many questions as to the correct way to host and attend church in a modern context. To address whether mega-churches fulfill the biblical expectations of the church, we must first examine what the purpose of the church is.
WAS JESUS A SOCIALIST?
Many current headlines make assertions about Jesus’s political views. Some even state that He was either a socialist or a capitalist. Both arguments—that Jesus was a socialist, and the alternative, that Jesus was a capitalist—have little founding in the biblical text. Jesus did not appear to communicate truths about which economic system should be advocated, but rather He often focused on how Christians should act within the governmental structures that they live in.
CAN CHRISTIANS JOIN THE MILITARY?
Wars may result from various reasons, but in many cases there are atrocious, genocides, and acts of violence against vulnerable groups that may compel a country to go to war. With war being an unavoidable part of life in a sinful world, how should Christians think about joining the armed forces?
WHEN SHOULD CHURCHES SUBMIT TO GOVERNMENT?
For several months, churches have undergone some kind of restrictions on corporate gathering and worship in order to slow the spread of Covid-19. This has led to conflicts between churches and government officials over their ability to gather for corporate worship in a manner consistent with their beliefs. For Christians, one of the primary issues involved in these decisions is our interpretation of Romans 13 and what it means to submit to the government.
THE HORRORS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING
People have been trafficking humans in the slave and sex trades for centuries. This issue has been gaining more media attention in recent months and has even sparked protests across the United States. This issue breaks the hearts of Christians as they often feel compelled to help, but also unsure of where to begin in such a secretive, evil industry.
IS THE COVID VACCINE THE MARK OF THE BEAST?
Some have suggested that the coming COVID-19 vaccine is the mark of the beast spoken of in Revelation. Many believers are unsure of how to address issues related to the end times and COVID as it relates to the end times is no exception. What does the Bible say about the mark of the beast and could it be the COVID vaccine?
FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION
Many injustices in contemporary culture have been brought to the attention of the church by the media and subsequent outrage. However, there are some injustices in contemporary culture that seem to slip below the radar of the church as they are difficult and sometimes even taboo to discuss for religious or racial reasons. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is one of these injustices.
CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS AND GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The Montana legislature created a scholarship fund used to help low income families attend private schools. People could donate to it in exchange for a tax credit up to $150. Following this, the Montana Department of Revenue created a rule which prohibited these scholarships from being used by parents at religious schools. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue that this limitation was unconstitutional. The government cannot limit the access of religious institutions or schools to funds made generally available to everyone simply because they are religious.
